Believing Is The Secret To Achieving!

I was surfing Rogers On Demand Sunday night looking for a good movie to watch when I found "Soul Surfing". It is a true story, and I love true stories, about a young girl in Hawaii who was destined for the pro surfing circuit. Read more.

While out training with her lifelong friend and fellow competitor and her friends father a shark attacks and takes her arm off. I am never going in the ocean again! You may remember this story from the news a few years back. Any normal person would accept that their surfing career was over and most certainly go into depression over the loss of a limb. It would be like learning how to live life all over again but without all the tools.

The point of this lead in is that this young girl was taught from a young age that she could achieve anything she wanted if she believed. And so, despite insurmountable odds, she believed she could surf again and began her journey back to what she felt she could achieve. It did not come without, a lot of pain and setbacks, but ultimately she made it to the pro surfing circuit and is a force to be respected.

After the movie, I reflected on how true this is in life and in business. How many times have I listened to dealers tell me that you can't get any more that 9% margin, or the guy down the street is selling for cost so you can't compete. My customers don't need retail financing, or commercial leasing is not applicable to our market place.

The list can go on and on but the simple fact is, if you believe this to be true than it is. Sound too simple? Well apply this to your own business. If your sales staff thinks they can only acquire a certain margin on new unit sales, then that is exactly what you are going to get or less. However, if they believe in the quality and service of your dealership and the product you sell, then they will aspire to what they can achieve. If you think your OEM's program will not be competitive, then it won't be. But if you believe you can sell the product regardless of any challenges you will.

I try to apply this philosophy to my own business. If I believed that nobody will want my services because the mass majority of dealers have never done financial performance analysis or business plans in the past, then I will never get any business. However, if I believe that this is an opportunity for dealers to be more profitable, then it is simply a matter translating that message. It's not easy, but I have a vision of building stronger dealers through financial management and I "Believe" it is achievable.

Instill the believe attitude in your staff and to your business and I think you will be surprised at what you can achieve! In other words, instead of focusing on all the reasons why not, focus on the ways you can and you will achieve.
