Finally, Something To Smile About

I think we can all agree that snowmobilers are a hard core group that have undying enthusiasm regardless of the cost or conditions.  The problem has been that over the last couple of decades, weather or more correctly snow conditions have not been very conducive to growing the sport.

Despite the ever growing concern over global warming, that all changed for snowmobilers last year.  Winter came early from coast to coast with an abundance of snow and cold conditions that avoided the usual mid season thaws.

Historically, you could always count on the year after a good winter to be a better sales season for snowmobiles, because the good conditions are still fresh in the minds of consumers.  After a cooler summer than normal and a forecast for another cold winter consumers seem to be primed for 2015.

As Kent Lister of Supertrax recently wrote, not only did Dealers enjoy a good new unit sales season in 2014, but more importantly they managed to sell out of non currents that were up to 3 years old http://www.supertraxmag.com/article.asp?nid=2773

His message to consumers is while he does not want to instil panic, it would be a good idea to visit your local snowmobile dealer now before they are potentially sold out of the unit you may want.

Roger Klein of CTV News Barrie also recently did a piece on the fantastic season snowmobilers enjoyed in Ontario last year.  He interviews two dealers who confirmed that not only were consumers shopping for new sleds as early as July, but that they had presold most of their order for this year http://barrie.ctvnews.ca/video?clipId=468334.

This is the best news I have heard for Canadian Snowmobile Dealers in years.  From a business planning perspective, this requires a significant change in thinking.

It has been my experience from working with dealers and analyzing financial statements that traditionally snowmobile margins are well below what they should be.  The rationale has almost been “order the least number of units you think you can sell to support your parts, accessories and service departments through the winter.”

It stands to reason because the season is short and the last thing a dealer needs and wants is to be stuck with 20 sleds on their floor at the end of the season.  Consequently, margins are slashed to ensure the current years order is sold, especially if winter conditions are late arriving.

While it may be difficult to change that hard wired thinking from so many marginal seasons of the past, consider changing your business plan to incorporate better margins this year with higher snowmobile sales.

Snowmobile Dealers deserve to make a better return on their investment in this business.   All the indicators are saying this is the year, so adjust your business plan to  make it happen and to make sure that you finally make the profits you deserve.
